SEE YA SUNDAY-Volume XLIV, Issue 25,December 17, 2008
The Christmas season is upon us. The sale ads in the paper are becoming more frequent and from more retailers. That is one sure hint that Christmas is around the corner. I am beginning to see decorative lights spring up around town. Another sure sign that Christmas is close at hand. My kids have been dropping hints for gifts that would make nice Christmas presents. Another sure sign that Christmas is on the way.
So what am I to do with all the indications that Christmas is around the comer? I have been thinking about this quite a bit lately. I have come up with several options. First, I thought about denying that Christmas exists. It would sure be cheaper. But that would be denying the truth of the existence of the Christmas Season. So I can’t really live with that option.
The next thought I had was acknowledging the existence of the Christmas season, but downplaying its importance. Sure it is Christmas but what is the big deal. It just means going in debt for a lot of gifts that no one really cares about anyway. So I think I will just ignore that part of Christmas this year. But I can’t, because Christmas is all about giving. God gave us His Son so that we could have eternal life. Does it gel any better than that? Sale ads here I come.
The more I think about forgetting Christmas, the more I realize how special this holiday celebration really is in my life. For a few weeks each year I am reminded on a daily basis of God’s gift to mankind-Jesus. I am jolted from my comfortable world into the realm of power shopping for gifts that I can give away to people that mean a lot to me. That brings joy to my life.
This Christmas season as you navigate the aisles of products, pondering what to purchase for that special person, I hope you will be reminded of God’s special gift to you. God gave sacrificially so that you and I could have eternal life. What are you going to do for others to point them to Jesus?
As I think about this Christmas season I realize that God sent His light into the world and now I have an obligation to be a light for someone in this world. So here is my suggestion for you this Christmas. Find someone that crosses your path and share the joy of Christmas with them. Maybe it is fresh baked cookies or free child care. You might even consider giving them a financial gift to help them with their Christmas shopping. Whatever you do this Christmas, don’t forget to give. In our giving, we let Christ’s light shine.
